Newsette December 2010

The Computer Club has lost Jim Faubert, Vice President, on November 9, 2010 in Kincardine, Ont. Jim’s health kept him away most of the past season. He willingly gave help at the Monday morning Help Sessions. Jim left us rich with his kindness, willingness to solve computer problems and his caring personality.

The Computer Club is working on plans for the 2010-2011season. Again minimal help will be offered on Monday mornings at 10:00 AM until noon in the Leisure Center. Regular class sessions will be Wednesdays at 1:00 PM in the Leisure Center. The Wednesday classes are $2. A donation slot in the computer cabinet helps defray cost for the club.

The last week in January Geeks On Tour, Jim and Chris Guld, will be in the park to present three seminars and Computer Boot Camp. Sign up for Computer Boot Camp will be announced later.

Maximum boot camp size is 16 computers with two people using one computer. This six hour session will be on Friday, January 28, 2011 from 9:00 AM to 12:00 and 1:00PM – 4:00 PM. Computer Boot Camp will be in Sports Center. Each computer will get a disc of instructions along with a workbook. Jim and Chris Guld, teachers, are limiting this camp to computers with Vista or Windows 7. XP will not be included in Boot Camp. The cost of Boot Camp will be $60 for the six hours of instruction.

You may read about the Geeks on Tour at www.geeksontour.com . Jim and Chris Guld are computer educators traveling the USA and teaching. You are encouraged to take this opportunity to attend the seminars for $2 each or sign up for Computer Boot Camp at the charges of $60.

The Loss of Jim Faubert

Our Computer Club has lost Jim Faubert, Vice President, on November 9, 2010. After years enduring back pain, Jim passed away in his home in Kincardine, ONT. For the 2009-2010 year he was unable to be out helping with computer questions or classes much.

This extremely kind and gentle person cared greatly for the HTR Computer Club. For several years he was instrumental in planning the weekly classes. He helped change the focus of these classes from the person who could teach to the topic that needed to be presented followed by locating the presenter.

Many times he said, “I want everyone who goes out that door to be able to do something!”

His wisdom will be felt and followed.

You may read about his long battle on his Caring Bridge site: http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/jimfaubert

This is also where you will find information concerning services for Jim.

February 2010 Newsette

The Computer Club class on February 3 will be a Q and A session. This is an opportunity to ask questions and hear answers from those with computer knowledge. It will not be a time to have help. The class time is from 1:00 – 2:00 PM.

Also, in February, there will be classes on GPS routing, social networking and a hands on class of Microsoft shortcuts. Each class is $2 and a handout is provided.

Because of the extensive use in the park of the available WiFi coming from the Leisure Center it has become necessary to limit use to those attending computer classes on Wednesdays from 1:00 – 3:00 PM. In addition, if you are able to use WiFi in your unit you can free up the bandwidth by disconnecting from the network when not in use. WiFi is also available in the Ken Jones building.

The computer center is totally staffed by volunteers of the Computer Club. It is not managed by the HTR park.

Help time is offered by volunteers each Monday morning in the Leisure Center. You are encouraged to come for help and/or volunteer to help. Your donations for help and use of the bank of computers and printer help maintain these services. Donations and the $2 class fee are the only source of income to operate the computer club. A donation slot is in the cabinet door.

GPS Systems Class topic 2-10-2010

GPS systems will be the topic for the weekly Wednesday class on February 10, 2010. Jerry Wessell, the presenter, has a wealth of information to give.

Jerry will have a hand out for the session as he makes explanations.

He says, “They can bring their GPS units or the information will work at home. I am thinking of taking a list from the people of their e-mail addresses and I can e-mail them the notes. Then they can click on the links in the notes and it will take them to the sites.”

He further says, “I am working to give them the most sites I can for all products: Garmin, Magellan, and Tom Tom.”

The Computer Club officers appreciates Jerry Wessell!

Enriched! by Geeks On Tour

The much anticipated week with Geeks on Tour has come and gone! We have been left with increased understanding of Safe Computing, Picasa and Google Earth. Attendance at these classes was outstanding. Our sincere thanks to Jim and Chris Guld, Mr. and Mrs. Geek, for spending the week at HTR.

Sixteen computers, with one or two participants each, spent one six hour day in Computer Boot Camp taught by Geeks On Tour educators Jim and Chris Guld. Participants now have a Boot Camp disc with many tutorial videos and a workbook.

Each may now move at his pace through the videos as learning is increased.

Boot Camp discs may be purchased at www.geeksontour.com. Look in the left pane for “Buy our stuff.”

HTR is featured on the  http://www.geeksontour.com/ personal blog. See the left pane with the red heading and select Geeks’ personal blog. Scroll down and read the entry for January 27, 2010. You may even see your picture there.
